Amherst Drive Free Day
           June 30th, 2021

Join us in this community wide event as we spend a day without driving. On June 30th, 2021 members of the Amherst community will do their part to reduce our carbon footprint and play a role in delaying climate change. Amherst Environmental Action wants to show people that every act no matter how small can have a positive impact on our planet. The goal of this event is to show people that we can all play a part in saving our planet and that changing our daily habits over time can make all the difference. We see this as a very small step in the right direction of addressing the global problem of increased Carbon emissions caused by transportation. If you would like to participate in this event please fill out the registration form below and start planning to commit to a day free of driving! At 6:00 pm on June 30th we will hold a zoom meeting to reflect on this day and share ideas for future events. This meeting is open to all even if you did not take part in the event.

       Amherst Clothes Drive
                August 1st-8th

In August we will host a clothes drive in Amherst where members of our community will be able to drop off  clothes that no longer fit, or are unwanted by the owner. This will help lower income families be able to afford newer and in style clothes without breaking the bank. At the same time reusing and passing on clothes that are no longer in use helps our planet because we can reduce the amount of new cheaply made clothes produced overseas. The new trend of fast fashion is hurting our home not only with carbon emissions but also with water pollution. It is estimated that The fashion industry is responsible for 8% of carbon emissions” (UN Environment, 2019).On top of this the dyes used to produce these clothes are polluting our oceans.

Our goal with this event is to get people to be more conscious about their buying habits, and to think twice before ordering that new style, or trendy shirt. At the same time we want to help members of our community find affordable clothing options that look good, and inspire confidence. Once these clothes are donated we will host a pop up shop at Amherst High School where these clothes will find new owners at an affordable price ($10 or less). The money raised from this event will go directly to Waste & Resource Action Programme (WRAP) an organization that works to extend clothing life and reduce clothing waste around the world.

Clothing Donation Pop-Up Shop
                     August 15th, 2021

Once clothes are donated we will set up a small shop outside of Amherst High School. On this day people will be able to browse and take home these repurposed  clothes. Prior to the event we will post photos of some of the clothing on our website to give you a preview. All of the profits from this shop will go directly to WRAP Waste & Resource Action Programme that works to extend clothing life and reduce waste caused by clothes around the world. Any clothes that go unsold will be donated to Goodwill and The Salvation Army.
